How to Market Your Merch

How To Market Your Merch

Making merch is one thing, but how can you effectively market your merch to your followers?

Creating conversations and building trust with your online presence is going to be essential. But you won’t make all these connections in one space. People live on multiple platforms today – Tik Tok, Instagram, Pinterest. You need to go to THEM. Make content that suits those audiences. People on Tik Tok aren’t going to respond to the same things that people on Pinterest will. Create a marketing strategy that feels genuine – but is still specific to who you’re targeting.

Learn more about how you can market your Spreadshop merch to users on all corners of the internet.

Tik-Tok

Tik Tok

Tik Tok is the most rapidly growing platform for content creators. Especially those that sell merch! The easiest and most efficient way to promote your merch on Tik Tok is to link your Spreadshop in your profile. This makes for good call-backs to your merch when you mention it in videos or for people who find your account randomly. The max video length for Tik Toks might be 60 seconds, but you can fit so much in that time frame. Play trending Tik Tok songs in the background, use funny filters or voice effects. You’ll be playing into what’s popular but hopefully be creating something that feels original.

Or make callbacks to your content with your merch like one of our brand ambassadors, Clueless Bushcraft (Tom). He filmed a Tik Tok of him doing everyday bushcraft, homestead things while wearing his merch. Tom made sure to direct his followers to the link in his bio to buy merch. And he even talked about upcoming designs that will soon be available in his shop. He proves that here’s a way to make merch-related content that doesn’t feel like stale promo. You need to put yourself and your message into it or people won’t buy what you’re selling (literally).

But not everyone will connect with your merch.

Hashtags should be used on every platform. They are particularly effective in finding your niche on Tik Tok. Targeting people with hashtags is going to pair you with audiences that are best suited for your merch. When people see how effectively you can market your own merch, it can open new business opportunities, like sponsorships. Marketability can be tricky. Staying genuine is the key.

Instagram

Instagram

You can do so much on Instagram to help market your merch.

With reels, stories, and static posts – there are many ways to break up content and promote your merch. But like any algorithm, Instagram favors those that are active and engaged with followers and the general community. Differentiate what works as a temporary story (24 hours) versus what feels like evergreen content for your profile. Promote limited sales and exclusive merch drops on stories. Take professional looking merch photos that will always be on your page. And don’t worry about having a fancy camera or professional lighting. You can find everything you need to create quality content right from your phone. If people have already bought your merch and are posting pictures of themselves wearing it, repost those! They just gave you free advertising, essentially.

Directing people to your shop on Instagram is a little different than other platforms.

You’ll have to get used to saying, “check out my merch at the link in my bio,” and things like that. Creating a one-stop link is ideal for Instagram and other socials. It can hold your shop, socials, and other projects you want to promote. Users who click on it will be able to learn more about you and your merch instantly.

Check out our blog for the best link in bio tools for merch sellers to find the one that’s right for you and your shop.

If you find that you have enough strong content and want to expand your marketing, ads are the next step. They can be in video or photo form and be targeted to specific demographics: age groups, similar interests, etc. Find out what posts would make good ads by checking your Instagram Insights and seeing what your followers respond to.

Pinterest

Pinterest

When you think about merch marketing, Pinterest probably doesn’t come to mind. But Pinterest’s layout allows you to maximize your content and brand in unique ways. You can easily find like-minded people that share interests and hobbies suited for your merch. Plus, those that are eager to buy. According to a recent study, 60 percent of users start product research and form ideas on what to buy on Pinterest.

What you would normally call a post on any other platform is referred to as a “pin” on Pinterest. A pin can consist of an image, video, or text. This will allow you to add links to your shop or socials. Attach relevant tags to your pins so people who search similar keywords will be able to find them more easily.

Pinterest also breaks up the type of content people might be looking for.

If someone wants creative ideas or input, the Explore tab provides plenty of inspiration. For consumers – and what you as a shop owner want to focus on – the Shop tab gives users product options and listings. Those most related to their search history appear at the top.

Take the time to take some high-quality photos that fit with the Pinterest aesthetic. Make sure that these images are vertical. 85 percent of Pinterest users interact on mobile devices. And shoot for a 2:3 aspect ratio. Align these images with the theme of your shop to create more engaging content.

People want to see something that’s unique to you. Think of how you can show your merch that not only reflects your shop, but your personality, too.

If you’re active on Pinterest and are engaging with users, the numbers will climb.

Check out our Ultimate Guide to Selling Merch on Pinterest to learn more about creating merch for the platform.

Youtube

Youtube

Merch has been a great, additional revenue stream for content creators on Youtube since the beginning. There’s a connection creators have with their followers on Youtube that you can’t get anywhere else. And merch is an extension of that bond.

The easiest way to market your merch is, again, having that shop link or one-stop link in the description bar of your videos. If you want to really get the word out, you should create a dedicated video about your merch.

One of our Brand Ambassadors, Daniel Batal, did exactly that.

Daniel helps connect other content creators with the tools they need to succeed on Youtube, and beyond. His personality is essential to his brand. He stayed true to his voice  when he talked about opening a Spreadshop in his video: Making Money on Youtube WITHOUT Being Monetized. He plugged his merch, but he also provided something of value to his subscribers that aligns with his other content. Think of how you can do the same for your channel.

Outside of creating specific videos, it’s always good to remind your followers about your merch at the end of your videos. A tagline, of sorts. Youtubers are always telling people to subscribe and check them out on socials, and this can be part of that. Throw on a t-shirt from your shop to show followers what your merch looks like in real life. Reassure them it’s something you’re proud to wear.

Don’t forget to remind people of sales or offers in your shop, either. Spreadshop is always offering discounts. It’s also a great way to engage your subscribers. Get input from them on the designs and styles they want to see.

Facebook

Facebook

Facebook might be the elder statesmen of the social media bunch, but it’s value shouldn’t be understated! There’s already an audience waiting for you, whether you realize it or not.

Groups on Facebook are designed for you to interact with people who have similar interests. Plus, they’re basically free advertising. The Tik Tok creator we mentioned before, Clueless Bushcraft, has a Spreadshop that would be perfect to share in outdoor related groups. He could drop in content from Tik Tok or wherever else with links to buy his merch in the description. It wouldn’t feel out of place because his brand is deeply rooted in the homestead, DIY lifestyle. Just be sure to look at the group restrictions so you don’t spam users with irrelevant information and get blocked as a result.

You can also create individual product listings on Facebook as part of your marketing strategy.

Take high quality photographs you’ve used across other socials for product photos in your Facebook shop. This is ideal for small business owners who want to get the word out. And you can even set it up so people are directed to your shop page to complete their purchase. Facebook is just a helpful intermediary in this situation, bringing users to your shop from their site.

Our Ultimate Guide to Selling Merch on Facebook will give you even greater insight into everything Facebook marketing.

Make Free T-Shirt Designs on Your Phone. Here’s How!

Make T-shirt Designs On Your Phone

Making your own free t-shirt designs is now easier than ever! Create t-shirt designs for FREE right from your phone thanks to the GoDaddy Studio app. And you don’t even need to be a pro-level artist.

GoDaddy Studio (formally known as Over) is the go-to option for beginner or novice designers. The FREE version of their app gives you everything you need to make print-ready t-shirt designs in minutes. These designs not only work for t-shirts, but every item in your merch shop: stickers, mugs, and more.

Don’t delay your Spreadshop launch. The excuse that you’re “not an artist” doesn’t work anymore. Learn more about how you can create your merch designs for FREE!

Starting From Scratch

Starting From Scratch

GoDaddy Studio’s navigation allows you to build free t-shirt designs easily. You’re not overwhelmed when you open the app – you’re inspired. Once you’re in the app, you’ll see a PLUS icon in the bottom center menu. You can click on that to choose transparent, white or black backgrounds for your design. We would go for the transparent option, especially if your design is text-based.

You can now enter in a custom size for your design based on pixel dimensions. For optimal print results, your design should have a high resolution and size. Our recommendation: set up the longest side of your design with at least 4000 pixels. This allows your design to be scaled razor-sharp on any print area – regardless of the product, without losing quality.

If your design is 4000 px by 4000 px, you can still alter how big the design will appear on your t-shirts in Spreadshop.

Uploading Images and Graphics

Uploading Images and Graphics

Once you have your background and dimensions set up, take note of the different icons on the bottom tab. The one at the very left – IMAGES – allows you to upload photos from your camera roll or pick from options in select libraries. Search for whatever type of image you want in the Unsplash and Pixabay tabs: bikes, ice cream, ferris wheel, etc. Images that have a FREE banner are fine to use. Anything with a PRO button requires a Pro Plan ($14.99/Month or $99.99/Year).

An image is allowed to be used on commercial products like merch 400 times before copyright comes into play. If you reach that amount, contact GoDaddy Studio and ask them how you can purchase the license for that image. You can also upload logos, but that falls under the Pro plan package. Graphics are another fun thing to play around with and look great on t-shirts.

The GRAPHICS tab is broken down into categories that make it easy for you to find what you’re looking for. Use the search bar at the top or pick one of their quick search options, like patterns or gradients. A lot of these graphics fall into the pro category. Try a 7-day FREE trial to see if it’s worth it before subscribing. Images and graphics look great on their own and are also complementary with text.

Text Options

Text Options

When you select the TEXT icon, a text scroll bar appears with preselected FREE fonts for you free t-shirt design. The Get More button at the end of the bar unlocks more fonts in a wide range of categories. Their library is organized into fonts of different styles and types.

Find themed fonts that speak to holidays like Halloween and Valentine’s Day. Or fonts that capture different aesthetics like Editorial and Rock n Roll. Since their fonts are named fairly accurately, GoDaddy Studio also makes it easy to search for specific fonts. Just browsing these fonts is enough to unleash some merch ideas. Once you have your font selected, you can start to make design adjustments.

Certain fonts have different styles within them that can affect boldness and look of your letters. Check to make sure that you have the best option for your design. Double-click to add your text. The STYLE section allows you to alter and enhance the look if you want. Allign your text to the left, right or center. Adjust the spacing between letters or the spacing between lines if your text is larger.

If you want a bolder design, consider putting it in all CAPS. You can also alter the curve of the text in the CURVE section. This looks great when you’re working with other images or just want to show movement with your text. Change the color of your text by scrolling through a color wheel. And give your text impact by adding a shadow.

Decide how severe and what angle you want the shadow to be at. GoDaddy Studio even lets you change the color of the shadow. This helps bring a whole new dynamic to your design.

Combining Images and Text

Combining Images and Text

After you have your text laid out, click the checkmark button on the top right to get back to the main menu. This will allow you to add images, graphics and even other text if you wish. Once you have an image/graphic next to your text, you’ll be able to see what you want to change to get a cohesive design.

The ADJUST area holds a lot of different options. Make your image look warmer, change the tone and the impact of contrast and saturation. Crop out areas of your image to unlock a new perspective. Mask (erase) instead of cropping if it’s easier with the design. You can also layer images/graphics on top of one another to create your own unique free t-shirt designs.

People aren’t going to be able to get this design anywhere else but on your merch.

Themes

Themes

If you need some design inspiration or don’t want to start from scratch, GoDaddy Studio also has templates. Unfortunately, you can’t add template elements to your designs. But it’s nice to see how they are coordinating text and graphics to create layouts. Find templates for categories like Fashion and Beauty that use identifiable colors and images to translate their message. You can even build your own logo. This could be specific to your merch brand or for another side hustle.

Swap the placement text and put in your own. Change the font. Alter the size of the image. Throw a filter on it. Even if you’re not going to use themes for your merch, they’re great for promotion. Make Instagram Story templates and Facebook posts you can share with your finalized merch designs.

But first, you’ve got to launch your shop.

Upload Designs to Spreadshop

Upload Designs to Spreadshop

Save your design to your camera roll. You can export it as a JPG or PNG. If you have a transparent design, PNGs are the only file that support that background. Now you’re ready to upload the final free mobile t-shirt designs to your shop. Enter a shop name (you can always change it later), email and password to create an account.

Browse for the files in your library or drag and drop them into the designs tab of your shop. Once your design pops up, you can start to put it on merch and customize the fit for each item. Make it larger on t-shirts and hoodies, and smaller on mugs and stickers. You now have FREE merch from your FREE designs!

Bring your vision to life when you launch your Spreadshop today.

Check out this tutorial if you still have questions about how to use GoDaddy Studio!

What it Takes to Be a Full-Time Youtuber in 2021

What it Takes to Be a Full-Time Youtuber in 2021

You don’t need to be a social media guru, know how to code or have previous experience in front of the camera to make it as a full-time Youtuber.

What you DO need is grit and determination.

Ask Daniel Batal. He’s been on the Youtube grind for years now, helping creators get the most out of their channels.

Daniel has seen creators come and go. He knows what it takes to find and sustain success on Youtube.

And it’s more than just making cool videos and seeing your subscriber count climb.

“The journey doesn’t end when the video is done,” Daniel says.

There’s so much work behind-the-scenes that goes into that video you watch from your phone.

It always helps to have some advice, and who better than Daniel?

He dropped a mountain of insight when we interviewed him for our Quit Your Day Job podcast.

Check out what he had to say about being a full-time Youtuber!

Just Get Started

Just Get Started

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: you just have to get started.

So many people delay themselves from taking on a new hobby or endeavor by telling themselves the reasons they can’t.

You don’t need to be an expert from the start.

“Don’t get caught up in the weeds of it, that will come. It’s going to take you time to get good at all those things,” says Daniel.

Ask any Youtuber and they’ll tell you about their early videos. Bad lighting, questionable makeup, shoddy camera work are all pain points likely to come up.

But they learned so much from those experiences.

If you look back on your past work and don’t cringe a little bit, you probably haven’t grown enough. Daniel didn’t wait until he was an expert to start his channel, either.

A professional musician and general contractor before he changed career paths, Daniel has always been a self-starter.

If you have that kind of attitude, you don’t really need X or Y.

You can develop those skills in time once you form an audience.

Target Your Audience

Target Your Audience

You need to have an audience in mind when you’re making content, even if the numbers aren’t there quite yet.

For Daniel, he wanted to make the kind of videos that weren’t on Youtube for fellow creators.

“A lot of the tutorials were either 40 minutes long and really boring by people who looked like they were my seventh grade science teacher,” says Daniel. “And I’m like, ‘get to the chorus already would you.’”

Daniel infused his personality into what his channel would ultimately become. And he knew who he wanted to target.

Developing this at the start of your channel will allow you to stay creative within those pre-determined boundaries.

It also informs you what your audience wants to see.

They’re not interested in food challenge videos (something Daniel briefly did on Youtube with his son). Daniel’s audience wants to learn how to make Youtube shorts, or get the most out of their video editing software.

These videos are relevant to all areas of content creation, and work for great Daniel and his channel.

You Need to Wear Multiple Hats

You Need to Wear Multiple Hats

Being in front of the camera is one thing, but a full-time Youtuber requires you to wear multiple hats offscreen.

You need to be a videographer, a brand influencer, designing, understand SEO (search engine optimization) and software development: the list goes on.

All these hats will help you create better content and promote it to the right audience. This will note only bring views, but help you further carve out your niche on Youtube.

And it’s never too late to learn these skills, just ask Daniel:

“There’s a lot of young content creators, all these TikTokers, and I’m like ‘who brought grandad to the party.’”

In his 50s, he’s out here proving that age really is just a number.

And he’s teaching young people how to use all this new technology!

Don’t Do It For the Views

Don’t Do It For the Views

If you get into Youtube for the views and the internet fame, you’re not going to be around that long.

Daniel has seen so many creators come and go since he launched his channel. They probably thought they were going to make viral content over and over.

“Youtube really is a marathon, not a sprint,” says Daniel.

You’re not going to sustain your channel or find your audience with trendy videos. Sure, they get clicks, but those people aren’t interested in your long-term growth and success.

Even successful Yotubers deal with dips in subscribers and ratings from time to time. You’ve just to keep making content that’s true to you and has value to keep people engaged.

People that are motivated by your Youtube presence are the ones that are going to champion your channel.

Subscriber counts and views don’t mean a thing if you’re not connecting with people.

“I care more about helping creators.”

Build a Community

Build a Community

Daniel considers Youtube to be a social platform above anything else.

“People go [to Youtube] to learn, to talk, there’s comment sections, there’s live streams, there’s community tabs,” says Daniel.

You can’t just post your video and be done.

Daniel makes a point to respond to as many comments on his videos as he can.

People are often surprised that he responds himself, but that proves how dedicated he is to his fanbase.

You’re not going to grow if you don’t take the time to engage with your followers and fellow content creators.

It’s important to interact with these people so you can help each other succeed. It can feel isolating when you’re doing it on your own.

“Being an island sometimes out there in the community can be tricky,” Daniel says.

Having a lifeline of fans and friends is only going to benefit you in the long run.

Being a full-time Youtuber might not be what you thought it was. But it pays off exponentially for people who go the extra mile.

Those that succeed have built something that will always be tied to their name. You’re creating a brand.

“I like the idea of owning my future,” says Daniel.
